To the Priests, Religious, and Lay Faithful of the Diocese of Katsina
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Pastoral Letter for the Season of Lent
Grace and peace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
As we enter the holy season of Lent, the Church invites us once again into what the saints have called “the season of grace.” It is a sacred time when heaven draws close to earth, and God gently calls us back to Himself. Lent is not merely a season of ashes, sacrifice, or sorrow; it is a season of renewal, healing, and hope. In the midst of our daily struggles, uncertainties, and burdens, the Lord speaks to our hearts: “Return to me with all your heart” (Joel 2:12). Lent is therefore an opportunity, a divine invitation, to grow in grace, to deepen our holiness, and to draw closer to the One who loves us beyond measure.
The Church gives us three simple but powerful paths for this journey: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Prayer lifts our hearts to God and reminds us that we are never alone. In prayer, we listen, we speak, and we rest in the presence of the Father. Fasting purifies our desires and frees us from whatever enslaves the heart. It teaches us that “man does not live by bread alone,” but by every word that comes from God. Almsgiving opens our eyes to the needs of others. It transforms love into action, making us instruments of God’s compassion in a wounded world. In our local context, where many of our brothers and sisters experience hardship, displacement, and insecurity, Lent calls us to become signs of hope. Let our parishes, communities, and families be places of kindness, reconciliation, and solidarity.
Dear priests and religious, your lives of prayer and sacrifice are a guiding light for the faithful. I encourage you to lead with renewed zeal, to preach hope, and to make the sacraments readily available during this sacred season.
Dear Christ’s faithful, do not be afraid to take small but sincere steps toward God. A few extra minutes of prayer, a simple act of fasting, a quiet gesture of charity—these are the seeds of grace that God will make grow.
May this Lent be a true pilgrimage of the heart for all of us. And when we arrive at the joy of Easter, may we do so with hearts renewed, faith strengthened, and love deepened. Entrusting this holy season to the maternal care of the Blessed Virgin Mary, I impart to you my fatherly blessing.
Yours in Christ,
+ Gerald M. MUSA
