Sun May 31 2026
The Catholic community of St. James Parish, Dandagoro, witnessed a historic moment as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Katsina, Most Rev. Dr. Gerald Mamman Musa, paid his first pastoral visit to the parish and administered the Sacrament of Confirmation to twenty five candidates.
The Eucharistic celebration commenced at 7:00 a.m. with a solemn entrance procession led by the Bishop and the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. John Ocheku. They were accompanied by altar servers, acolytes, thurifer, cross bearer, lectors, catechists, and other liturgical ministers. The celebration began with the incensation of the altar, followed by the introductory rites.
In his welcome address, Rev. Fr. John Ocheku warmly received the Bishop and expressed the joy of the parish community at hosting him for his first pastoral visit to St. James Parish. He described the occasion as particularly significant as it marked the first Confirmation ceremony in the parish since its creation.
The Mass continued with the Liturgy of the Word, after which the twenty five candidates for Confirmation were formally presented and introduced to the Bishop. The candidates, having completed the necessary catechetical preparation, were deemed ready to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit through the Sacrament of Confirmation.
During his homily, Bishop Gerald reflected on the significance of Holy Trinity Sunday, the solemnity being celebrated throughout the Universal Church. He explained that while the term "Holy Trinity" may not appear explicitly in the Bible, the reality of the Trinity is clearly revealed throughout Sacred Scripture. Referencing the account of creation in the Book of Genesis, he highlighted God's words: "Let us make man in our image and likeness," noting that this expression points to the communion of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
The Bishop emphasized that the Holy Trinity is a perfect model of unity, love, harmony, and communion. Just as the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit exist in perfect relationship with one another, Christians are called to live in peace and unity within their families, communities, and the Church. He challenged the faithful to become "pillars" who build up society and the Church rather than "caterpillars" that destroy and tear down what others have built. He encouraged everyone to foster relationships marked by love, cooperation, and mutual respect.
Following the homily, the Bishop administered the Sacrament of Confirmation through the laying on of hands and the anointing with Sacred Chrism, invoking the Holy Spirit upon the candidates and strengthening them for their Christian mission.
The celebration continued with the Liturgy of the Eucharist, culminating in the consecration and reception of Holy Communion by the faithful. Following the Communion Rite, parish announcements were made, and various groups, families, and organizations within the parish offered thanksgiving to the Bishop for his pastoral visit and spiritual leadership.
A highlight of the celebration was the presentation of the parish address by the Chairman of the Pastoral Council, Mr. Peter Atado. Speaking on behalf of the parish community, he outlined the progress made by St. James Parish and acknowledged the efforts of the Parish Priest in promoting the growth and development of the Church. He also expressed gratitude to Bishop Gerald for his continued support, particularly regarding the ongoing construction of the parish priest's rectory. He prayed for God's blessings, wisdom, and good health upon the Bishop as he continues to shepherd the Diocese.
The Mass concluded with the final blessing and a joyful recession. The celebration ended with group photographs involving the Bishop, clergy, parish leaders, and the newly confirmed candidates, marking a memorable and historic day in the life of St. James Parish, Dandagoro.
The pastoral visit served as a moment of spiritual renewal and encouragement for the parish community, strengthening their faith and commitment to building a vibrant Catholic community rooted in the love and unity exemplified by the Holy Trinity.
